Arch Manning Steers Texas to Historic Feat for Second Time in Half a Century

The No. 1 Texas Longhorns continued their undefeated season after a 35-13 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Week 5 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. This also marked the Longhorns’ first conference win as a member of the SEC.

Texas’ starting quarterback Quinn Ewers suffered an abdominal injury in Week 3 against UTSA, keeping him out for the previous two games. Redshirt freshman Arch Manning has stepped up in Ewers’ place, and that remained true against Mississippi State.

In just his second career start, Manning completed 26-of-31 passes for 324 yards and three total touchdowns, two through the air and one on the ground. The New Orleans native also helped the Longhorns reach a feat they’ve only accomplished one other time in the previous 50 years.

According to ESPN analyst Cole Cubelic, the Longhorns have started 5-0 in back-to-back seasons for the second time since 1975. The only other occurrence came in the 2008 and 2009 seasons when Colt McCoy was leading the charge under center.
