New AISD athletic director Jason Glenn preaches family first, starting with date nights

It’s 5 o’clock on Wednesday and Jason Glenn punches his time card. His workday is over.

It’s been that way since the Austin Independent School District athletic director married the former Terrika Hickerson 23 years ago. This is one way Glenn keeps his life balanced. All work and no play can ruin the best of relationships, he reasoned.

So, every Wednesday is date night.

“I’m usually in the office around 6:30 or 7 in the morning,” Glenn said. “At 5, I say, guys, date night. They know it.”

Glenn began his new job in July and is still learning about the Austin area. His staff — namely assistant ADs Lynn Pool and Odis Jones and area athletic coordinator Crystal Victorino — have given him a list of the city’s best places to eat and to have fun.

The former Texas A&M All-American and longtime NFL linebacker is serious about a family-comes-first attitude to work.

“If you miss out on your kids’ recital or games or anything important at home, I’m going to make sure to look to replace you,” he said. “We’re here to work, absolutely. But this job is not going to take the place of your family. That’s how you keep the balance. The family piece is huge. I’m not looking for a team. I’m looking for a family here.”
