A Williamson County jury has awarded a family more than $1 million for health problems they suffered because of their mold and pest-ridden rental apartment, a lawyer said.
Kristi and Cory Wright sued Whitestone Crossing Austin LLC in 2022, claiming that the owner, through management, neglected to repair their apartment that had water leaks and mold that made them ill, contaminated their belongings and created an uncontrollable pest problem, according to the lawsuit.
The lawyer representing Whitestone Crossing LLC, James Miller, declined to comment about the verdict that the jury reached on Dec. 19.
Kristina Baehr, the lawyer for the Wrights, said that to her knowledge it was the first jury trial in Texas in the past decade to show injury from toxic mold.
“The Wright family was standing up for all families who pay rent and have the right to safe air,” Baehr said. The jury awarded the Wrights $1,061,500 after a three-day trial.
