Advocates for homeless prepare to activate cold weather shelters

AUSTIN, Texas – With cold weather coming to Central Texas, preparations are underway already to activate cold weather shelters next week. It looks like we are going to see overnight lows drop by about 15 degrees between now and Monday, and that puts people living outside at much higher risk for hypothermia or even frostbite. So, on a day when the temperature hovered somewhere in the 50s, advocates for homeless people in Austin are looking ahead to even colder temperatures. ” We’re looking at next week, we see that a very strong cold front is coming in so we’re starting to prepare for cold weather shelter when we activate,” said Greg McCormack, the program manager in the city’s Homeless Strategy Office.
