Austin’s Sixth Street businesses struggle amid new security fences

AUSTIN, Texas — Several bars and businesses on East Sixth Street are reporting a significant drop in business, attributing the decline to newly installed security fences. Teagan Shunkwiler, Facilities Manager at Wild Greg’s Saloon, said, “It feels like it’s halved.”

Austin Police installed the fences in January as part of a city pilot program to improve safety, allow through traffic, and provide more space for pedestrians. However, some people, like Darren Clark, are finding it difficult to navigate the area.
