Fatal Pedestrian Collision and Separate Crash Lead to Long Delays on I-35 in Downtown Austin

Early Saturday morning, a section of Interstate 35 in downtown Austin became a tableau of tragedy and disruption following two separate traffic incidents, including one that claimed the life of a pedestrian. According to KXAN, the collisions prompted the closure of both the upper and lower decks of the interstate, causing significant traffic reroutes and delays in the area.

The fatal incident occurred near the 1100 block of North I-35 heading south, close to 12th Street, when a vehicle struck a pedestrian at approximately 1:25 a.m. “ATCEMS said medics performed CPR on the adult patient, but the patient died at the scene,” as reported by KXAN. The southbound lanes were subsequently closed as officials conducted their investigation, with traffic being diverted to the frontage road at exit 234C.

Meanwhile, a separate crash also led to Traffic congestion on the southbound lane of I-35 at Dean Keaton on the lower deck, where all lanes were temporarily shut down. However, these lanes have since been reopened, as stated by the Texas Department of Transportation.
