Flow of people moving to Austin slowed significantly in 2024, data shows

AUSTIN, Texas — New data shows Austin gained new residents at a slower rate last year than the year before.

Redfin analyzed the “net domestic migration” – or the difference between the number of U.S. residents moving into a metro area and the number moving out of the same area – for the 50 most populous U.S. metros as of 2024. Redfin calculated the difference from July 2023 to July 2024 and found the flow of people moving to the Texas’ capital slowed significantly last year.

In 2023, the net domestic migration for Austin was 22,219. But in 2024, it was 13,980 – down 8,239 people…
