AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department will increase patrols downtown and on Lake Austin over the Memorial Day Weekend to make sure Austinities are staying safe during the holiday.
An increased number of patrol officers will enforce traffic laws downtown between Thursday and Monday.
APD previously extended their DWI No Refusal Initiative from holidays and special events to year-round. The initiative means officers can obtain a blood search warrant when an arrested driver refuses to submit a breath or blood specimen. The initiative is in effect each day between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Meanwhile, APD’s Lake Patrol Unit will be enforcing a city ordinance that bans the use of personal watercraft, wet bikes, motorized surfboards and similar devices on Lake Austin. The ban goes into effect at sunset on Friday and ends at sunrise on Tuesday…
