‘You do not want to swim in this water’ | Officials say what’s under the surface of Lady Bird Lake makes it dangerous

AUSTIN, Texas — As summer temperatures climb, paddleboards and kayaks will fill Austin’s Lady Bird Lake as people try to cool off while drinking in the city skyline.

But after two drownings in the last month, police are urging the public to be extra cautious and reminding visitors that swimming in the reservoir is both illegal and dangerous.

“Unfortunately, in the last month, we’ve had two drownings related to people who rented those paddleboards, and took off their life jackets, and got into an uncomfortable situation because of the depth and the hazards in the water, and succumbed to those injuries,” said Lt.
