Travis County calls for humane treatment of immigrants, law enforcement transparency

AUSTIN, Texas — The Travis County Commissioners Court advanced a resolution calling for the humane treatment of immigrants in custody and increased transparency in law enforcement’s detainment procedures.

The resolution, which passed at a meeting Tuesday, says fundamental rights granted through the U.S. Constitution extend to all, regardless of immigration status, and migrants have the right to challenge unlawful detainment through habeas corpus.

It also states “to promote accountability and public confidence,” law enforcement involved in detaining or transferring migrants in Travis County must wear body cameras, clearly display their identification and uniform, and refrain from concealing their face unless they need to for health-related reasons…
