Do You Believe In Ghosts? Central Texas Has Some Chilling Stories

Central Texas has friendly residents, barbecue places, and bluebonnets galore, but after dark, there are some pretty scary places around here. From haunted hotels to cursed highways, here are a few of the creepiest ghost stories that locals say are true. Read on if you dare and maybe leave a light on.

The Haunted Hallways at the Driskill Hotel in Downtown Austin

The Driskill is very fancy, but it is also notoriously haunted. Built in 1886, the downtown Austin landmark reportedly has more than one creepy story. The first is of a young girl who fell to her death walking down the grand staircase. In another story there are guests, both alone and together, that have reported hearing a ball bounce down the stairs at night when no one is on the staircase. Other people report seeing a woman dressed in Victorian clothing staring from the windows. It is enough to make you book a room pretty much anywhere else.

The Stagecoach Inn’s Restless Guest in Salado

The Stagecoach Inn has been in Salado since the 1800s hosting travelers, and some of them apparently did not check out. Employees have observed strange sounds, flickering lights, and phantom footsteps. One room in particular is haunted by a woman who once waited for her husband to return from war, and when he never came home, she decided she didn’t want to continue living. Romantic? Maybe. Creepy? Yes.

Dead Man’s Curve on Highway 95 near Granger

If you are driving between Taylor and Granger late one night, don’t blink. Locals say an old man in overalls is standing by the side of the road before he disappears. As you drive a little further all of a sudden, he reappears in the middle of the road, and you drive right through him. Locals have nicknamed it Dead Man’s Curve, so that does not help to ease the anxiety on the drive.

Whether you believe in ghosts or just love a good scare, Central Texas has more than a few entertaining stories that will send chills through you.
