Whataburger last Central Texas hub with the iconic A-frame design

Whataburger is one of the most iconic homegrown brands that’s been part of Texans’ lives for decades. The beloved fast food burger chain has become a staple for late night food runs, early morning breakfast and all-day meals.

Over the past 75 years, Whataburger has grown beyond its humble beginnings in Corpus Christi to now capturing the hearts of Americans nationwide. But before the San Antonio-based burger joint opened over 1,100 locations in 13 states, Whataburger’s first expansion efforts began with an old-school and now rare restaurant structure in Texas.

The Lone Star State boasts a majority (more than 750) Whataburgers, a handful of which still have the restaurant’s signature A-frame design. Whataburger’s oldest restaurant in Austin, located at 6106 Cameron Road, is the only Central Texas location that has the company’s original architecture.

In 2021, the San Antonio Express-News reported there were only 10 original A-frame Whataburgers left, as the restaurant’s design evolved with new and remodeled locations to resemble the iconic “flying W” logo, which extends to a larger kitchen and dining space…
