Two homicides in 24 hours raises Austin’s homicide count higher than this time last year

AUSTIN, Texas — A fight between roommates and a hit-and-run marked Austin’s 31st and 32nd homicides of the year. This puts the city’s homicide count higher than at this point last year (30).

In North Austin, a fight between 72-year-old Ronald Mixon and 61-year-old Robert Saldana escalated into a homicide, marking one of the city’s most recent violent incidents. The altercation happened yesterday afternoon at an apartment complex on East Wonsley Drive in North Austin. Austin Police reported that officers were called to the scene around 2:15 p.m. and spoke with Mixon. Mixon told officers that Saldana had come home, called him slurs, slapped him, and threatened to kill him.

Three hours later, officers returned to the complex to find Mixon dead from multiple stab wounds. “A 9-1-1 caller indicated there was an unconscious person on the floor, and there was blood,” said David Lewis, a police officer with the Austin Police Department. Saldana was found at a nearby bus stop with a cut and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He is now being charged with first-degree murder…
