Pope Leo XIV Appoints a Waco Native as Sixth Bishop

Austin, TX (FOX 44) – Pope Leo XIV has appointed Daniel E. Garcia as the sixth bishop of the Dioceses of Austin.

Bishop Garcia has roots in Waco and Cameron Texas and holds multiple degrees in Liberal Arts, a Mastery of Divinity, and a Master of Arts in Liturgical studies.

In 2018, Pope Francis named Bishop Garcia the Bishop of the Diocese of Monterey, California where he has since been serving since 2019. He now returns to his home diocese in Austin where he had previously served as auxiliary bishop and was where he was ordained a priest.

The bishop is bilingual in English and Spanish and currently serves as chair in the Subcommittee on Divine Worship in Spanish. Included in his lengthy list of accomplishments, as pastor of the St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Austin he guided the community through its formation and multiple building projects, including the construction of a permanent church and sanctuary…
