Austin cancels July 4th celebration due to flash flood warnings and safety concerns

AUSTIN, Texas — The City of Austin canceled its annual Fourth of July fireworks show and Star Spangled Fest event at Auditorium Shores on Friday due to flash flood warnings and saturated grounds.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for western Travis County until 4:30 p.m., with 1-3 inches of rain already fallen and up to 2 additional inches forecast. Officials warned of life-threatening flash flooding along waterways, creeks, streams and low-lying areas.

The event, held in partnership with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, was called off due to “saturated event grounds, current and ongoing weather conditions and increased safety concerns,” according to a city statement…
