AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police are warning about reported “scam calls” where callers are claiming to be APD or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), police said in a social media post.
The impersonators then say the caller recipient has immigration issues or fraudulent charges, police said.
Georgetown Police warn of fraudulent callers posing as officers
“APD will never ask about immigration status or call about fraudulent charges,” police said.
APD provided tips on how to protect yourself from this potential fraud:
- Any calls from (512) 974-XXXX that claim to be ICE or APD are a “scam,” APD said
- Don’t share personal information, like passwords or banking information
- Don’t click on suspicious links
Anyone who believes they may have been a victim should call 311 or file a report online. APD numbers can be verified through the public information office at 512-974-5017 or the [email protected] email…
