Austin Muslim community mourns loss of imam killed by intoxicated driver

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin’s Muslim community is mourning the lost of Imam Islam Mossaad, a local spiritual leader who was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver Sunday night.

CAIR Austin said that Mossaad served as an Imam in various mosques from 2008 to 2023, and was known for his spiritual counseling, education circles, public speaking and interfaith outreach.

“Imam Islam Mossaad was a servant leader—never too big to do the small things, never too small to do the big things. His legacy goes beyond sermons and prayers—he built bridges with the broader Austin community and civically engaged with everyone,” Shaimaa Zayan, the Operations Manager of CAIR Austin, said. “We mourn his sudden and tragic loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family.”…
