The Tallest Building in Texas Title Moves to Austin

The tallest building in Texas is now located in Austin.

On Friday, August 1, with the installation of its final beam, the Waterline Tower overtook the JPMorgan Chase Tower in Houston as the tallest in the Lone Star State. That beam officially raised the height of the Austin giant to 1,025 feet.

The Former Tallest Building in Texas

For nearly 45 years, the 1,002-foot JPMorgan Chase Tower has soared over the Downtown Houston skyline.

The Houston skyscraper does feature two more stories than the Waterline (75 versus 73), but when it comes to overall height, the Waterline takes the award by over 20 feet. Both structures are over 1,000 feet tall (said in your best Morgan Freeman voice), that’s more than 3 football fields.

The New Tallest Building in Texas

The Waterline Tower is located at the intersection of East Cesar Chavez Street and Red River Street, just a few hundred yards away from Lady Bird Lake.

DPR Construction began work on the Waterline in 2022 and is expected to be completed in 2026. It features over 350 luxury apartments, 703,000 square feet of office space, a 252-room hotel, and 24,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space…
