With the new school year around the corner, the city of Austin is hiring crossing guards.

What’s happening: The pay rate for crossing guards is $21.63 an hour.

The fine print: Candidates must be at least 18 years old to apply.
- Crossing guards must be able to walk or stand in adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and thunderstorms, per city guidelines.
- Hear and see approaching traffic or pedestrians and perceive and appropriately respond to potential traffic hazards.
- Raise and carry a stop sign weighing up to five pounds upright.
- Push or pull a child out of harm’s way.
