Austin Police Investigate Early Morning Homicide on IH 35, Suspect Detained After Witness Intervention

The early morning calm of August 2nd was shattered by a tragic incident at 712 North IH 35 Southbound Frontage Road, as a man was found bleeding at the intersection of East 8th Street, around 3:20 a.m., prompting a swift response from the Austin Police Department, as reported on their official news release.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, later identified as Jerry Roland, a Black male born October 12, 1964, he was unresponsive and suffering from severe bleeding, despite the immediate medical attention provided and transport to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas, Roland was pronounced deceased at 3:50 a.m., as the situation unfolded it quickly escalated into a homicide investigation that captured the city’s attention. Witnesses at the scene played a crucial role, leading to the detention of suspect Scott Graves, a 39-year-old White male.

Digging deeper into the incident, homicide detectives alongside crime scene specialists collected evidence and gathered accounts from those present, the preliminary findings suggested a violent altercation originated when Mr. Roland approached the suspect’s tent, and in a moment marked by violence, Graves left the shelter and inflicted the deadly stab wounds on Roland, Graves then proceeded to move his tent from the area and attempted to leave the scene but was stopped by the officers, the gravity of the situation cementing the area as a crime scene…
