17-Year-Old Suspected of Fatal East Austin Shooting, Community Mourns 38th Homicide Victim

Tragedy struck at an East Austin apartment on August 8, when police were called to a reported shooting. According to the Austin Police Department, officers found a male with a gunshot wound at 2609 Rosewood Avenue. The victim was later identified as Michael Atwood, a young Black male born on May 24, 2007. Despite efforts by Austin Travis County Emergency Medical Services, Atwood was pronounced dead at the scene a short time after their arrival, marking a grim tally as the city’s 38th homicide of the year.

Investigations into Atwood’s death led detectives to Douglas Clyde, a 17-year-old Black male. The arrest, having taken place without incident in Manor, Texas, came after the task force swiftly acted on the warrant issued the day after the fatal confrontation. While in the company of a juvenile girl identified as his current girlfriend, Clyde encountered Atwood, reportedly the girl’s ex-boyfriend, and fatally shot him before fleeing the scene, as per the findings of the APD’s preliminary investigation.

The details of these tragic events, as well as the community’s reaction, are still emerging. With the suspect currently in custody, the Austin Police are continuing to reach out to the public for further information. They encourage anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact the Austin Police Department at 512-974-TIPS or anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program…
