Matthew McConaughey has been in and out of Austin since the late 80s when he started at UT. For over 30 years, he’s been a staple of the capital city, as much a part of its fabric as Barton Springs, Mount Bonnell or UT itself. He is, after all, Austin’s Minister of Culture.
Though the actor did the requisite actor thing and moved to L.A. for a while, in 2014 he returned to Central Texas with his family where they still live today. Because of all this time in the area, plenty of Austinites have had a run in or two with the star, and the only thing they seem to love more than running into McConaughey is telling other people about the experience.
