Austin assisted living facility executives indicted in 2021 winter storm hypothermia death

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — A Travis County grand jury has indicted an Austin assisted living facility, along with its former Executive Director, Mendi Ramsay, and Wellness Director Rochelle Alvarado, for the offense of Injury to an Elderly Person during the 2021 winter storm.

The indictment stems from an incident on February 17, 2021, during the severe winter storm Uri that caused power outages.

According to the indictment, employees at the Renaissance Austin Assisted Living Facility failed to promptly move 73-year-old Cynthia Pierce, an elderly and disabled resident, to a warmer area within the facility after finding her in an unheated room with open windows.
