Texas’ No. 1 BBQ joint takes a tumble on South’s best BBQ ranking

In Texas, barbecue is king, a time-honored cuisine that has captured the hearts and appetites of everyday residents, as well as the Michelin Guide. The Lone Star State is even home to its own “barbecue capital” with Lockhart, an epicenter where the likes of Black’s Original Barbecue, Barbs B Q and Kreuz Market reign supreme.

But how does Texas barbecue stack against the South? Southern Living has unveiled its rankings of the 50 best barbecue joints across the South, and the highest Texas contender claimed the No. 2 spot. Snow’s BBQ, a Lexington barbecue restaurant located roughly 52 miles from Austin, is overseen by 90-year-old pitmaster Tootsie Tomanetz. The no-frills joint is only open on Saturdays, and barbecue enthusiasts venture out out to Lee County each weekend to line up for service before the sunrise.

“Long loops of firm, coarse-grained sausage with a brisk snap to the casing are piled alongside, thick sliced brisket rimmed with a sweet fat cap, hearty pepper-studded spareribs, and—best of all—tender, juicy pork shoulder steaks with a big punch of post oak smoke in its mahogany-hued bark.
