Hozier preaches to the masses at Austin City Limits music festival

Irish singer-songwriter Hozier let his music do the talking for most of his headlining set Friday night at the Austin City Limits music festival.

The “Take Me to Church” singer is known for his progressive views, but he’s better known for passionate, literary songs that dig much deeper than most pop music. He’s sung about the apocalypse and the afterlife on recent albums and still inspires optimism in his fans.

On Friday, he and his big band — including strings and backup singers — cranked up the volume on songs cherry-picked from his three albums, songs such as “Jackie and Wilson,” about raising his kids on R&B; his No. 1 hit “Too Sweet”; and “Work Song,” where he promises to crawl out of his grave to return to his love…
