AUSTIN, Texas — A new push to audit the Austin Police Department’s training academy is drawing strong opposition from the Austin Police Association, which says the move is unnecessary and hurting morale.
The Austin Public Safety Commission voted unanimously this week to recommend a full audit of the department’s academy reforms, saying they want to know what progress has been made after years of reports and recommendations for change.
“We’ve seen various attempts at tracking progress across these recommendations,” said Commissioner Michael Sierra-Arévalo. “To date, we do not have clear documentation of the changes that have been made.”…
