Austin’s Wheatsville Co-op moves forward with store closure, halts expansion

One of Central Texas’ grocery institutions is pulling the plug on a previously announced expansion plan, while still moving forward with shuttering one of its two locations.

Staff at the Guadalupe store are being offered a range of support during the transitional period, Bickford said, including roles at the South Lamar store, job placement services and added compensation. In anticipation of the impending closure, Wheatsville launched “departmental resets” at the Guadalupe location to minimize the sales floor, reduce inventory levels and help mitigate thefts, which have been reported at the Central Austin location in recent months.

Other changes include discontinued deli counter service alongside some product close outs in “slower-selling categories.” Officials are also relocating certain equipment to the South Lamar store, such as unused cash registers, prior to the shopping influx around Thanksgiving…
