AISD’s Project SEARCH program teaches students with disabilities work skills in the hospital

AUSTIN, Texas — A new program in partnership with Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, Goodwill, and the Texas Workforce Commission is helping Austin Independent School District (AISD) students with disabilities prepare for their future careers.

Through Project SEARCH, AISD students who have just completed high school get to learn real-life work skills in a hospital setting during the school year. The students will spend 10 weeks in each rotation at the hospital, from food services, to pre-op, the OR, and emergency imaging.

“It helps them see what career path they might want to pursue,” said Celeste Vasquez, the Project SEARCH business liaison. “It gives them the skill set to take any role that they want, not just health care.”…
