One person was killed at a bus stop in downtown Austin on Wednesday morning, and the suspect remains at large, according to police.
Cpl. Jose Mendez said Austin police received a call just after 8:30 a.m. reporting that someone had been shot near the bus stop at 401 E. Fifth St., near Austin’s Fire Station No. 1 at the corner of Fifth and Trinity streets. When officers arrived, they found the victim — described only as a Black man — with “obvious trauma.” Emergency personnel performed life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead around 8:50 a.m.
Mendez said that while the initial call reported a shooting, officers are still working to confirm whether the victim was actually shot. No weapon was found at the scene. Officers are searching for the suspect, and APD’s Downtown Area Command is canvassing the area for witnesses and security footage. Police have already spoken with several witnesses, Mendez said.
Police said Trinity Street would be closed between the 400 and 500 blocks for several hours as police investigate, and drivers should seek alternate routes. According to CapMetro, the affected bus stop is the Brush Square NB (Trinity/4th), which serves the Rapid 837 Expo Center line running from Republic Square downtown through the Decker stop at the corner of Decker and Loyola lanes in East Austin.
