SWAT Team Resolves Standoff with Suspected Felon Barricaded in NW Austin Apartment

On Wednesday, a tense situation unfolded in northwest Austin when a woman reported her ex-boyfriend had unlawfully entered her apartment. Austin Police Department officers arrived at the Bridge at Avery Ranch apartments, located at 9225 North Lake Creek Parkway, around 11 a.m., responding to a distress call. Cpl. Jose Mendez shared during a media briefing that the man in question had an active felony warrant for family violence assault by strangulation, according to CBS Austin.

Upon the officers’ arrival, the suspect began behaving “very erratically,” as reported by Cpl. Mendez, in a statement obtained by KXAN. He then barricaded himself inside the apartment, making threats to “blowing the building up and not being arrested today.” A three-hour standoff ensued, during which nearby residents were evacuated and the APD SWAT was called to the scene to manage the crisis.

The estranged woman was not present in the apartment during the incident. She monitored the situation via her security cameras from a remote and secure location. The SWAT team, along with hostage negotiators, managed to establish communication with the man throughout the standoff.
