What does 2025 data on driverless car crashes show for Austin?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Datasets from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggest that most collisions involving autonomous vehicles, or AVs, in Austin this year were likely not the fault of the AV.

The data provided by the agency includes information such as contact areas, speed at time of collision and the pre-crash movements of the vehicles. Each incident also includes a narrative related to the crash. These were provided by the companies operating the AVs, which the NHTSA notes is a potential limitation of the datasets.

Since the start of 2025, there have been 68 AV crashes that necessitated a report to the NHTSA.
