Raccoons discovered in downtown Austin sinkhole

AUSTIN (KXAN) — During street repairs Thursday, workers with the city of Austin discovered a hole that had “at least one raccoon” inside.

“[Raccoons] can have healthy habitats in underground infrastructure and were curious,” the city of Austin said. “They appeared healthy and showed no signs of distress.”

The city said the raccoons left the hole without provocation, likely due to the human activity nearby.

“It is recommended not to interact with raccoons directly as they are wild animals and can carry the rabies virus, which is easily communicable to humans,” the city said…
