DPS Border Mounted Patrol Unit Marks First Anniversary, Continues Operations Along Texas-Mexico Border

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) marks the first year of its Border Mounted Patrol Unit, which began in November 2024. The unit, based in Austin, includes Troopers and horses. It operates along the Texas-Mexico border, focusing on areas where regular patrols face challenges.

Texas Highway Patrol Chief Bryan Rippee noted the unit’s work and credited both Troopers and horses for their efforts. The unit coordinates with local, state, and federal agencies. It supports ground patrols and uses horses to help track and detain people who try to avoid border checkpoints.

On October 19, 2025, the unit took part in an operation in Kinney County. With help from K-9 Arya, the team apprehended Adan Delgado-Ortega, a 52-year-old Mexican national. Delgado-Ortega has a record of multiple deportations and felony convictions. He was found on a private ranch…
