AUSTIN, Texas — A new marker on Hamilton Avenue in East Austin now commemorates the home of Richard Overton, who was the oldest-living World War II veteran in the United States before his death in 2019 at the age of 112. Overton’s cousin, Volma Overton, expressed that the dedication is “as close to what I say he would like to see happen to his home.”
The home, with the help of Huston-Tillotson University, will now serve as a landmark. “Richard wanted his home to be a museum,” Volma Overton said, adding that Overton always thought of Huston-Tillotson University as a caretaker for his house.
