Austin ISD eyes possible charter school model for three F-rated schools to prevent takeover

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A decision on whether three Austin public schools will become in-district charter schools could come as early as January, according to district leaders. Burnet, Dobie and Webb middle schools have been on state-mandated turnaround plans since the beginning of the year, after earning four consecutive F ratings from the state.

The district could face district-wide state takeover if any of the three campuses earn a fifth unacceptable state accountability rating this year, which could include the Texas Education Commissioner appointing a board of managers.

In June, the Austin Independent School District board approved an ‘1882 Partnership’ contingency plan that would allow the district to bring in an external partner to operate the three schools as charters if student performance at the schools did not meet the targets in the turnaround plan…
