Austin’s steep decline in murders mirrors national decline, analysis shows

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin has recorded 54 homicides so far this year, 25% fewer than in 2024, according to KXAN’s tracking.

If the total remains the same through the end of the year, it would mark the city’s lowest homicide total since 2020, when Austin recorded 48, according to APD data.

The trend in Austin mirrors a national one. Data from the Real-Time Crime Index, which tracks crime nationwide, shows that the U.S. might see the largest ever year-over-year decline in recorded homicides.
