Exclusive: Security camera ‘unplugged,’ armed security advertised before NYE party death

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A security camera inside the Austin Event Center that might have captured what could turn out to be the city’s first homicide of the year was “disconnected” at some point, according to the business owner, who spoke exclusively with KXAN.

“It’s not on,” Miriam Hernandez said pointing, puzzled, to the overhead camera.

On Thursday, Hernandez took KXAN inside the empty event space where less than 24 hours earlier a young adult was pronounced dead suffering from “obvious trauma to their chest,” according to Austin Police.

Asked how she knew the camera wasn’t working, Hernandez pointed to the absence of a red light. She said she didn’t know why it appears to have been disconnected…
