AUSTIN (KXAN) — Ascension Seton Medical Center said Thursday that it recorded a birth just two minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day, potentially marking Austin’s first birth of 2026.

The first baby to be born this year was Derek Sanchez at Ascension Seton at 12:02 a.m. His birth weight was recorded at five pounds and five ounces.
On Wednesday, St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas recorded a close second, just three minutes after Derek was born. That child, Opal June Ixchel Cruz, had a recorded birth weight of five pounds and four ounces.
