Severe storm risk today, strong winds overnight

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The radar is starting to pick up as a few showers and storms build with the arrival of a strong front.

The first change in our weather pattern comes with a broken line of storms moving in along a Pacific cold front, catching up with a dryline already in place this morning. Spotty rain could start as early as this morning, but it’s looking more likely that spotty storms will organize near the I-35 corridor midday before pushing east.

One or two storms may turn strong or severe, but generally speaking, the risk is low with damaging wind and large hail being the concerns should storms find enough strength. Areas east of I-35 have the highest chance for a strong or severe storm this afternoon.

A stronger, Polar cold front pushes much colder air and stronger wind gusts through Central Texas overnight.

Much cooler weekend

This will make for a colder and windy Saturday with wind gusts in the 30-45 mph range while temperatures fall to the 40s and 50s. Wind chills Saturday morning may drop below freezing for many parts of the Hill Country.

Afternoon highs will recover to the 50s and 60s this weekend… but be aware, we’ll start Sunday morning (and Monday, at that) with a near-widespread freeze.

Seasonable outlook

Much of next week will be much closer to “normal” for mid-January in Central Texas with lows in the 30s and 40s with highs in the 60s.
