Power outages likely, but weekend ice storm probably won’t cause trouble seen in 2023 or 2021

Tens of thousands of Texans lost power during the ice storm of 2023, when power lines were weighed down by ice and toppled by fallen trees. So this week’s icy forecast is again defrosting fears of power loss for those who endured outages in that storm and the deadly multi-day freeze of February 2021.

But while forecasters are anticipating slick roads and moderate impacts on power lines, this weekend’s weather isn’t expected to cause the sorts of significant outages seen in those earlier events.

“While this weekend’s storm will still bring large-scale hazards, there is no indication it will reach the severity of 2021,” said Anthony Franze, San Antonio Express-News newsroom meteorologist…
