North Texas hit by snow, ice and single-digit temps. These photos show the first impacts of the winter storm

Snow and ice were reported across a broad swath of North and Central Texas by Saturday afternoon as the winter storm intensified across the state.

Icy conditions arrived in the Panhandle as early as Friday and had reached Kerrville by Saturday afternoon, as temperatures by 3 p.m. dipped below freezing as far south as Austin. Highways and bridges across much of the state were slippery with ice and, in some places, snow , according to the Texas Department of Transportation’s live road conditions tracker. Temperatures fell to the single digits in some parts of the Panhandle and a hard freeze set in over Dallas by mid-afternoon.

In the Austin area, streets and highways were beginning to ice over by just after 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Sleet was falling in West Texas near Alpine on Saturday afternoon, coating roads with slush, according to a video shared by the Department of Transportation.
