Extreme cold warning extended to 9 a.m. Tuesday for Austin, San Antonio, Hill Country

An extreme cold warning has been extended until Tuesday morning for South and Central Texas, including both the Austin and San Antonio metro areas, the National Weather Service said Monday.

The extreme cold warning, which was set to expire at noon Monday, will be in effect through 9 a.m. Tuesday. Prompting the weather service’s extension are expected nighttime air temperatures and wind chill values (or “feels like” temps) that could become “dangerously cold,” or as low as the teens or single digits.

Temperatures that frigid “could result in hypothermia or frostbite on exposed skin if precautions are not taken,” forecasters said. “Extreme cold will become life-threatening and likely damage unprotected pipes and put livestock at risk.”

The Texas counties under the extreme cold watch include Llano, Burnet, Gillespie and Blanco counties in the Hill Country; Williamson, Hays, Travis Bastrop and Caldwell counties in the Austin metro area; as well as Bexar County and the surrounding San Antonio metro area…
