Roughly a year and a half after dirt began turning, one of Central Texas’ most beloved trail systems is gearing up for its grand opening, soon offering residents and visitors an uninterrupted, 10-mile exploration of Texas’ capital city.
The City of Austin began work on its wishbone bridge and unity underpass project along Lady Bird Lake back in July 2024, centered around connecting the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Longhorn Shores, Canterbury and the Holly Peninsula within the Town Lake Metropolitan Park. Its completion offers residents and visitors alike uninterrupted access to the trail, with users historically having to travel on the sidewalk along South Pleasant Valley Road to reach the northern shore of Lady Bird Lake.
Trail users won’t have to wait much longer, with the wishbone bridge and underpass slated to officially open to the public on Saturday, February 7, a city spokesperson confirmed. The ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening will feature a party on the plaza hosted by the City of Austin and The Trail Conservancy, topped off by live music, food trucks and activities.
