Central Texas schools urged to prioritize student safety amid rising protests

TEMPLE, Texas — The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation is urging Central Texas school districts to take steps to protect students and classrooms as protest activity increases across the region.

The nonprofit, also known as the Uvalde Foundation for Kids, issued a public safety advisory citing recent demonstrations in Pflugerville and planned student walkouts in the Austin Independent School District. The guidance is aimed at maintaining student safety, de-escalation and stable learning environments during periods of heightened community tension.

“Communities are under real strain, and people want to be heard,” said Daniel Chapin, founder and national director of the foundation. “But schools must remain places of learning, stability, and emotional safety.”…
