Busy Austin street gets safety improvements after death of pedestrian

AUSTIN, Texas — One of Austin’s busiest streets is getting much-needed safety improvements. Imam Islam Mossaad was killed in July of 2025 while walking near the Muslim Community Center on North Lamar Boulevard. The goal of this project is to prevent more deaths and injuries.

A pedestrian hybrid beacon (PHB) is being installed at 11900 North Lamar Boulevard. It is a traffic control device used at unsignalized, marked crosswalks on busy roads to help pedestrians cross safely.

“Two cars hit each other, and then one of the cars hit Imam Islam Mossaad while he was on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead on the scene,” said Shaimaa Aayan, who has pushed for safety improvements in the area…
