AUSTIN (KXAN) — Ashley Spence leaned towards the microphone and looked directly at lawmakers. A second later, the entire room fell silent.

Her gripping testimony during a Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee hearing last April recounted her survival after being sexually assaulted in 2003, when she was a college student at Arizona State University.

“I went to bed and in the middle of the night an intruder came into my apartment — into my bed, smothered my face with a pillow and began to rape, beat and nearly killed me,” she told lawmakers. “I endured this for hours. He escaped, and I never saw his face.”…
