Caution urged as blue-green algae found in Austin waters

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The presence of potentially toxic blue-green algae has appeared in multiple Austin waterways over the winter and the city urges residents to take precautions heading into the spring.

Austin Watershed Protection has been monitoring the mats of algae in local lakes and creeks. They said when warmer temperatures come, so will an increase in the algae.

The mats typically resemble dark blobs floating on the surface and can be mixed in with other types of algae, according to a press release from the city of Austin.

The city of Austin says to carefully assess water before entering by yourself or with your animal. They advise against going into water that has: algae along the shoreline, warm/murky water, visible algae, or rain in the past three days…
