What started as a routine delivery in downtown Austin on Wednesday evening turned into a chaotic carjacking and crash, according to police. A 19-year-old woman is accused of stealing a delivery driver’s car on the 600 block of West Seventh Street, hitting the driver with a glass bottle, then tearing through downtown traffic before finally slamming into a light pole. The delivery worker was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and another driver involved in the mess was not seriously hurt, officers said.
From quick stop to violent struggle
Austin Police told KXAN that the delivery driver had left his vehicle running while making a drop-off at an apartment complex on the 600 block of West Seventh Street. When he came back, a woman was already in the driver’s seat and trying to take off with his car. The driver tried to stop her and was struck with a glass bottle, according to APD.
Officers said the suspect sped away, heading south on Rio Grande Street. She allegedly ran a red light at West Sixth Street, collided with another vehicle, then kept going instead of stopping, police told KXAN.
Crash, crowd and quick arrest
The chase came to an abrupt end a few blocks later. The stolen car lost control and smashed into a light pole at West Fourth Street, where officers quickly swooped in and boxed in the scene, according to Yahoo. An onlooker captured images of the wrecked vehicle as police detained the suspect at the site of the crash.
Police said the driver of the other car involved in the earlier collision did not suffer serious injuries. Medics transported the delivery worker to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to Yahoo.
