Junior Pitmasters Shine at Rodeo Austin BBQ Cookoff

Youth cooks did more than just “help out” at the grill at Rodeo Austin’s BBQ weekend. They took over. Junior pitmasters, kids ages 8 to 17, lined up beside veteran crews as the two-day cookoff filled the Travis County Exposition Center grounds with smoke, music and carnival rides.

BBQ Austin Kicked Off Rodeo Season

The BBQ Austin event ran Friday and Saturday at the Travis County Exposition Center, drawing cook teams and families for a weekend of food and rides. Hours ran Friday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., according to Rodeo Austin.

Local TV Zeroed In On The Junior Pitmasters

Local TV crews quickly found the story in the kids working the pits. Cameras caught young competitors calmly explaining their seasoning choices and grill techniques while judges made the rounds, sampling plates and peppering them with questions. KVUE aired a video feature on the contest, showing junior cooks turning in pork chops and talking with organizers as part of its weekend coverage, as reported by KVUE.

How The Junior Contest Works

The Junior Pit Master contest is split into two brackets: Junior for ages 8 to 12 and Senior for ages 13 to 17. In both divisions, pork chops are judged on appearance, taste and texture. According to the event rules, check-in for junior cooks starts at 10:30 a.m., with a 10:45 a.m. meeting and a 12:30 p.m. turn-in. Rodeo Austin supplies the pit, charcoal, official apron and chop, while young competitors bring their own utensils, rubs and sauces, per the Junior Pit Master information from Rodeo Austin.
