Austin woman was visiting Houston to help friend with cancer when she was fatally shot in Heights

An Austin woman visiting Houston to help a friend through cancer treatment was identified Monday as the woman fatally shot and robbed of a car late Friday after parking along a street in the Heights, prosecutors said.

Marietta Allison, 61, fought back against a would-be purse snatcher in the 500 block of W. 20th Street, near Shepherd Drive, after spending a long day with her friend at a hospital. The assailant, later identified as 18-year-old Darius Hall, pulled out a gun and shot her once in the neck, prosecutor Katie Rogers said in court.

She died at a hospital as police searched for the missing vehicle, which was later found with Hall behind the wheel…
